London photography course

Beginners and intermediates

“I took a look at your website
for London courses and the photos look fantastic, they really do.”
Steve Cowtan, editor of ‘Find a Photography Course’.

We may now meet, as I host my one day London Photography Course in eclectic corners of London. I have designed these courses to introduce and develop both beginners and intermediates to the world of creative photography. Enjoyment is my key to improving photographic skills, whilst we explore and photograph some of London’s finest habitats. And whilst some shots above may not appear to be London, they simply show how amazingly diverse London is. I have never consciously sought a style, believing our subject should decide this with versatility our paramount skill. Consequently ways of seeing, camera settings and composition become the critical factors, and it is these skills I will pass on. My five London Photography Course workshop locations, can all be seen below. You may judge my photography through the five minute gallery above (mouse over/pause) and my qualifications to teach through the paragraph below. I also offer ‘Gift Vouchers’, landscape photography courses on the Suffolk Heritage Coast and one week Italian photo holidays. I am also happy to organise a personalised session for a family group, friends or colleagues.

My book, ‘London, As you’ve never seen it before’ will coming soon.

Why I am well qualified to teach

I feel very fortunate in having gained exemplary teaching experiences and have used these to structure my London Photography Courses. I have regularly lectured at Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts, London), London College of Communication and Norwich University of the Arts. This, together with being commissioned by some of the UK’s most iconic organisations, has helped build and define my career. It has also been a source of inspiration for me, in developing my Italian Photography Course Holidays. Amongst many influential clients, I have been commissioned by the BBC, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Design Council, the National Portrait Gallery, the British Tourist Authority and the V&A Museum. In my early post student years, I worked for Sir Terence Conran’s design group; J. Walter Thompson agency and Chris Dorling and Peter Kindersley the precursors of Dorling Kindersley Publishers. My work has been shown in the International graphic publication Graphis’, The ‘Designers & Art Directors’ Annual and ‘Modern Publicity’. Recently I have been invited to become a Getty Images photographer and so I feel that all these experiences have contributed to me being a well qualified. Additionally my ski coaching and Alpine guiding experiences with both adults and children, has helped develop my organisational skills. Well they all got down!

Learning on London photography course

My one day ‘London Photography Course’ workshop includes tuition, demos and advice, to introduce and develop beginner and intermediate photography skills. Subjects covered may range from cityscape, architecture, transport and interiors to learning to capture creative portraits. Whether you use a smart phone camera or preferably an SLR camera, the relaxed workshop tuition will be in inspiring environments. These beginner to intermediate introductory courses, will include photographic tips for everybody wanting to improve their basic photography knowledge. My London photography course is tuned to developing your creative eye and occasionally even making the ordinary, extraordinary. How to develop an understanding of light, when to use hard light and when soft light. Once you are developing a feel for the aesthetics, I will guide you towards taking fuller control of your camera. “I hear I forget, I see I remember, I do I understand”, is my London photography courses mantra. During a photo session I occasionally take shots myself, some of which I may use to give examples of our working method. During a course I often take shots of the group as you practice, some of which I may use to give examples of our working method. I also reserve the right to reproduce an image in any media, that may exemplify a photographic point.

A few student comments

“I really enjoyed Roland’s photography for beginners class at Walberswick and feel I know a lot more than when I started the day. The theoretical bit at the beginning was very useful for introducing me to basic observational skills for making photographs more interesting, and it was very helpful that Roland illustrated this with examples of his own work. The practical exercises using the brief Rol gave us was fun and very enjoyable, especially because we were in Walberswick which offered lots of good photo opportunities, and it was nice to then have Roland’s feedback when we looked at them on the laptop. I am a complete beginner, and others in the group were either more advanced or much more advanced, but happily that didn’t seem to matter. I would definitely recommend this Suffolk photography course, and it has whetted my appetite to learn more about photography.”Valerie Greenfield, London, 29th October 2017

Mary Davies, Muswell Hill, London said: “Roland is an excellent teacher. The course was very well organised and I learned a great deal. He helped me get over my nervousness of shooting portraits and I was enjoying this so much, that I didn’t want to stop! I think he got the balance right between theory and practice and I liked the assignments we were set. All in all a great day which I really recommend.”

Steve Brown, Sheffield said of my Italian photo holiday: “I recently returned from an extremely enjoyable Italian Photography Holiday Course in Campania, Southern Italy, and a world away from nearby Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Mornings and early evenings were spent photographing a spectacular blend of nature and historical sites as well as local life. And in between frequently retiring to an outdoor restaurant and pool for a leisurely lunch. I learnt a lot about photography which was why I attended in the first place, but that apart, I experienced traditional small town Italian life, for real. I was welcomed by charming locals and didn’t encounter a single non-Italian there all week, although we did experience ‘tourism’ when we visited the Amalfi Coast for a day. Highly recommend this holiday and would like to re-visit the area after learning some Italian.”

And Steve Cowtan, editor of ‘Find a Photography Course’ added: “I took a look at your website for London courses and the photos look fantastic, they really do.”
